BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Co-organizers of the first BRICS Media Summit on Monday held their presidium meeting, agreeing to further promote media exchanges among BRICS countries.
The meeting was hosted by Cai Mingzhao, president of Xinhua News Agency and executive chairman of the summit. Leaders of the Brazil Communication Company, Russia Today International Information Agency, the Hindu Group of Newspapers and South Africa's Independent Media attended the meeting as co-chairpersons.
The meeting has passed six initiatives on practical media cooperation among BRICS countries, including setting up a liaison office for BRICS Media Summit, establishing BRICS Media Foundation, setting up BRICS Media Journalism Awards, holding a BRICS joint photo exhibition as well as training and exchanges for BRICS journalists and a coordination mechanism for BRICS joint media coverage of G20 Summit.
Cai said cooperation among BRICS countries covers sectors including political, economic, financial, trade, social and cultural fields.
"The media, as a carrier of information communication and messenger for cultural exchanges, play an irreplaceable role in deepening cooperation among these countries," he said.
Participants at the meeting have agreed to further media exchanges among BRICS countries for better development and cooperation of the five countries.
Proposed and hosted by Xinhua, the first BRICS Media Summit opened on Tuesday in Beijing. Leaders from 25 media groups from the five countries attended the event.
